never had admin. Password - locked out

I've been running XP home for a year or more and have
never entered an administrator password, never set one
up, and have never been prompted for one. Today, my
computer was locking up with online, then again offline
so I re-booted. At the start up, Windows asked for the
user password and does not accept that there isn't one.
What to do?
