Never A Detection!

Hi,
Its been more than a year I've installed WinDefender 1.1.1593.0 on my
computor. I regularly carry out updates and scans through it. But it never
showed me any kind of detection or threat (through scan or real-time
protection). I just wonder if WinDefender is really active on my PC!
(Real-time protection shows ON). Is it of any use? Other anti spywares
(ad-aware, spybot) show detections from time to time and also remove threats.
But never WinDefender!!
Would anyone please mind say if its normal?
Thanks.

I never got any detection of a threat, but if you go to the "Event Viewer"
you will see that Defender does detect some stuff. Double click on
"Applications" and you will see some warnings and possibly even some errors.
I just ignore those (because I don't know what else to do with them).
Sometimes Defender will alert you to a new start-up item, too.

Hello kamyogi.

If you want to see WD Real Time Protection in action, try the EICAR the test
file...

From Joe Faulhaber [MSFT]:

For those of you who want to know what we're talking about, the EICAR group
came up with a harmless file detected by antivirus products so you can safely
verify the product's working. If you haven't seen Windows Defender detect
something, visit http://eicar.org, download the 68 byte file eicar.com.txt,
and copy it to your startup folder. Your AV solution (that you should be
running in addition to Windows Defender) will also pick it up."

I hope this post is helpful.

Let us know how it works ºut.

You almost sound disappointed! If you are a surfer who visits those naughty
siites, I would say NO ! ;) On the other hand, if you do not - stay cool.

I`m a very conservative surfer and WD doesn`t `flag` much apart from the odd
software install. Then it awakes !! WD stands at current version:

Windows Dfender: 1.1.1593.0
Engine Version: 1.1.3109.0
Definitions:1.24.5054.0

It can be updated thru the wonderful links provided by Engel here:

Alternatively, there is a daily update of defs available thru:

I don't find "Event Viewer" in my WinDefender! If you mean "History", there's
nothing in the Allowed or Quarantined Items' list. :(
