Hello everyone,

My wife has a laptop with Windows 2000 and your home computer has Windows
XP. She is trying to use the printer and also backup some file on a drive
that we could share.

We already share the Internet Connection with a router, but I can't get her
laptop to find or recognized that the other computer exist or the there is a
shared drive or printer.

Do I need something special?

Thanks

Probably not. Just a little troubleshooting.

First thing (almost always) is can you PING here
name or her address from the command line:

ping NameOfHerComputer

ping Address.Of.Her.Computer

(If you need to find her address, you can type:

ipconfig

....if you still have trouble afterwards we will also
want you to type:

ipconfig /all >wife.txt
[on her machine]

ipconfig /all >xp.txt
[on the XP machine]
....then paste the contents into an email and post it her.
Don't take screen shots or try to retype it but give us
exactly what the files produce.)

Actually they should both work if you are using
the same ICS (as router) to reach the Internet.

You can also try this from HER machine to your
machine with the obvious changes in Name and
then Address.

If they don't, one would expect HER machine to have
more trouble reaching your machine IF you have the
XP firewall enabled. Or if you or your wife is running
a third party firewall.

If the XP firewall is the problem you will have to configure
it (or disable it) in the NIC properties.

You might also type:

net share
(on each machine)

....and confirm that you have something shared that does NOT
end in a $ -- which hides those shares.

There must be at least one non-hidden share offered for a
machine to show up in the browse lists.

If none of that is working or helps then we will need to
look at those IPconfig /all output files.

Hi Pat,

Herb's advice is good. He is testing the connectivity between the two
machines to see if they can talk to each other. I hope this helps, but
when I set up my nephews home network, I just created a workgroup and
put both computers on the same workgroup. Once you have added the
computers to the same workgroup and enable sharing on the drive that
you want, right click over the hard drive you want to share and click,
"Properties - Sharing - Share this hard drive". This will enable
sharing of the HD

Right click on "My computer" and click "Map network drive". Enter the
computers name and drive: for example \\computername\$drive name. You
should be prompted for a user name and password. Use the user account
and password that is local to the target computer. This should work and
map the drive for you. Here is a link that provides step by step
instructions for this process. I'll follow up with the posting in a
few days in case you have any further questions.
