Hi,

I'm trying to help someone with Windows Vista and a network problem.

I'm able to connect to the local network, I'm assigned an IP through
DHCP, I'm able to ping router and other PC's on the lan, but I'm not
able to open the routers interface in any browser or open any webpages,
address given as url or ip. This problem aplies to both wired- and
wireless networkinterfaces

So far I've tried to disable IPv6 and link... No success
Deleted and made new connections. No success
ipconfig /flushdns. No success

Said some rather nasty things quite loud to the computer. No success

Anyone here who has any suggestions what to do next?

Regards,
Tommy

Hi Tommy,

Can you access Hotmail through the Browser? You mentioned a Router. Have
you performed a Factory Reset on the Router? Have you disconnected the Power
both to the Modem and the Router for 1 minute?

When you can't connect to any Webpages on a Wired or Wireless Computer,
the problem isn't with the computer, but the Router or Modem involved.

What IP Address are you given from the Router?

If the computer has an IP that starts with 169, then the machine doesn't
have an IP from the router. The 169 IP is a sign of trouble and is assigned
by the O/S to the NIC when the O/S cannot get an IP from a DHCP server, and
the NIC has been configured to obtain an IP automatically. The 169 IP will
allow the computer to access other computers on the LAN, but the IP will not
allow the computer to access the router's admin screen or the Internet,
since the computer is not using a valid IP on the router.

If the computer does have the 169 IP, you can try IPconfig /release and
IPconfig /renew at the Command Prompt to see if that will release the IP.
But sometimes IPconfig will not release the IP the O/S won't release it,
which could also be your problem between the wired and wireless network
(NIC's) and no connection.

Nope. No webpages, specified by IP or URL. Could almost seem like the
DNS server is unavailable or DNS-server is specified wrong on the PC,
but this is not the case...

Yep. Reset the router and disconnected power on the router through the
night.

Tried with an other laptop, and everything work perfect. Still belive
the problem is the computer (and Vista).

Hello Tommy,

Is the Vista pc getting an internal IP address via DHCP from the router?
Post the results of ipconfig /all (run from an elevated command prompt).
The following may be helpful:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928233/en-us

If all the TCP/IPv4 settings seem correct, ie you have a normal internal IP
address, try specifying the IP address of the router as DNS server, with
your ISPs DNS server as additional.

You make no mention of the brand of router. The router may not even be
compatible to Vista some are not. You should take the machine to a wireless
cafe and see if it can connect. I have connected the same Vista machine
three ways to the Internet with dial-up, wireless on hotel's LAN and at
client's site LAN with wired and no problems.

Hi Tommy,

Are the Notebook Wireless Adapters you are using, interchangeable? Are
they the same and model number? Can you switch them, to see if you have a
bad Adapter?

Well, finally it works. Someone suggested to run this command and
options : netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disable

Thanks for your suggestions...
