Have any of you had trouble networking between computers,
windows XP on one and windows 98 on the other? Are they
compatible? I do understand that Windows 2000 will not
network with windows 98, at least that's what I've been
told.

It depends.

We need to know a little bit more about your setup.
How are your computers networked? Are they using a
router, switch/hub, or connected via a crossover cable.

I know one thing that you should look for is goto
network properties for tcp/ip protocol. Make sure that
you enable netbios over tcp/ip, which should make your
computer visible in network neighborhood/network places.
Also, are both computers on the same workgroup/domain? If
not, they need to be.

After you verify these two items, and go into network
neighborhood/my network place and click on computers near
me, check to see if the other computer shows up. If not,
then goto: start -> search -> files or folders -> scroll
down on the left and choose the computers link. Type in
the name of the other computer and see if it shows up.

If all else fails, then sell your computer to me for
$20 and use a calculator and a typewriter from now on, as
technology sux right? LOL.

Yes, they are.

Greetings --

Actually, you've heard wrong. It's quite easy to network Win2K
and Win98. WinXP and Win98 is even easier.

On the WinXP PCs, create local user account(s), with non-blank
password(s), that have the desired access privileges to the desired
shares. Log on to the other PCs using those account(s), and you will
be able to access the designated shares, provided your network is
configured properly. Also, make sure that WinXP's built-in firewall
is disabled on the internal LAN connection.

Usually, WinXP's Networking Wizard makes it simple and painless --
almost entirely automatic, in fact. There's a lot of useful,

There is no "compatible". Networking is networking. You can have an Apple
Mac and network it to your 98 and XP if you wish.

FWIW, I network 2 x 98SE and 2 x XP Home on the home lan.

As to W2K not working with 98 on a lan, bulldust! It is all DATA so of
course it will work. If it didn't work then your 98 machine ringing in to an
ISP that uses W2K couldn't use internet!
