I have a about 5 computers on my network at home. They are
connected by workgroup. I want to be able to make it so
that some other computer on my network as to type in a
uname and password to be able to access the files on my
computer. Can anyone tell me how this can be done?

If this is a situation where you want to log on to PC "A" and see files on
PC "B" you could easily do it by simply logging onto "A" and mapping a drive
to "B" - but if you want this to happen if you log onto PC "A", and PC "C",
and PC "D" ... and so on ... there's no easy way to do this in a workgroup.
If you have a Windows Server you can create a domain and use logon scripts
to do this.

It isn't possible to control networked access to your computer based
on which other computer requests it.

If you have XP Professional, you can disable simple file sharing and
control access to your shared disks and folders based on user names
and passwords. Ron Lowe and I have written a web page with details:

Windows XP Professional File Sharing

If you have Windows XP Home Edition, or Windows XP Professional with
simple file sharing enabled, here are some ways to control access to
your shared disks and folders:

1. Create a hidden share and only tell selected people about it. I've
written a web page with details:

Windows XP Simple File Sharing

2. Assign a password to the "Guest" account. When other people try
to access your computer from the network, they'll be prompted to enter
the password:

a. Click Start | Run.
b. Type "control userpasswords2" in the box and click OK.
c. Under "Users for this computer", click Guest.
d. Click Reset Password, enter a password, and click OK.
