Networking XP Pro

I've set up a new laptop with XP Pro on a small network with SBS 2000.
It has internet access
It has the same permissions everyone else has
The server can see it
but it will not allow me onto the network
Is there a something in Services that I need to turn off or on?

Dave,

Please explain a bit "The server can see it but it will not allow me onto the
network". What are you doing when "the server can see it"? What is happening
when "it will not allow" you onto the network? Is this a domain or workgroup?
Have you setup authentication properly?

When I go into my network places and drill down to where I can see all
computers I see the new laptop. I cannot do the same going from the laptop
to the server.

Dave,

OK, if the problem is visibility in Network Neighborhood, the problem is very
likely a firewall, or a browser conflict. Check for Windows Firewall, and for
any overlooked third party firewall. Use browstat to diagnose a browser
conflict - run browstat from the laptop, from a working client computer, and
from the server, and compare all 3 logs (or post them here).

The error message is:
the list of servers for this workgroup is currently not available.

I'll look at the firewalls, I don't have browstat

I now find that multiple PC's as well as the laptop are expierencing the same
problem. The PC's have short cuts to the servers and can access them just
fine, however, if they go to entire network, and drill to the domain they all
get the same error "the list of servers for this workgroup is currently not
available."

Dave,

That's a classic error associated with a browser conflict.

Read the links - I posted them to help you. There are details about the
firewall issue, and about how to get and run browstat.

Got it, thanks, when I ran the setup for the new sony laptop it activated a
new personal firewall for symantec. I turned that off and it fixed the
problem everywhere.
thanks

Another overlooked firewall. Thanks for the update.
