Networking Win2K to XP

Ken

I have a broadband router to connect my XP machine and my
Windows 2000 pro to the internet. However, I cannot get
the machines to share file folders like I can with my
other XP machine. What is the trick? I can see the XP
machine on the MSHOME network from the 2000 machine, but
when I click on it, it says I do not have a sserver or
permissions....

The Win2k Pro machine must also be a member of the MSHOME workgroup and both
machines must have an idenical username/password account.

Dou's right-the critical part is the user names/passwords
must match, assuming you're using XP Home. The workgroup
has little to no value-it's only used for a browsing
convenience.

XP home only uses a simple security model for file sharing:
every user account on the XP machine can read/write to any
user-created shares.

Simply duplicate the XP user accounts onto the Win2k
machine, passwords included.

Any shares on the Win2k machine must be setup to allow
those XP users to have access to them.

Keep in mind, that a user named Bob on the XP machine is
technically a different account than the one named Bob on
the Win2k box, since they are members of different "machine
domains". So you have to manually synchronize their
passwords and make sure the shares are correctly secured.

good luck!

Please reply to newsgroup for clarification.

I faced the same problem up to a few minutes ago. I had to
adjust my personal firewall settings to accept (Trust this
address, if using McAfee) each computer's source IP
address. Let me know how it works out.

Cheers,
