Networking w/98 Sharing Problem

L

Lisa

I have a Win 2000 computer and I'm trying to network with
a Win 98 computer. I've gotten the 98 pc online and it
can see the 2000 computer, but says it doesn't have
permission to access it. My 2000 pc can see and access
the 98 files. I have shared my 2000 drives, but I'm not
sure how to share on the network, obviously my shares
aren't working.

Thanks for the help.

Hi

Maybe this will help

*** Problem Description ***
Sharing files and printers over a LAN --
Adding IPX/SPX to the network, the shares will open up with no problem.
XP/2000 on a LAN with 9x computers sometimes have problems seeing each
other and also sharing files and printers.
To fix this problem add IPX/SPX and then the problem with seeing the other
computers and printers would be gone.

This is after you check and made sure the computers are on the same work
group and do not have the same computer name.
Also make sure file and printer sharing are enabled on the computers.

Resolution:
==========
We will look at a LAN that has a Windows 98 (which could be a WinME Box)
and Windows XP (which could also be a Windows 2000 box).
Windows XP
***************
1. Start > Control Panel> Network Connection's
1A. First before you add IPX/SPX . Enable NetBios over TCP/IP in the TCP/IP
advanced properties.(XP Only)
2. In the LAN's connection's Properties, click the Install button to add a
network component. XP will ask what type of network component to install.
3.Click Protocol and Add
4. Click NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol and click OK.
Two NWLink items are added to the connection's Properties

Windows 98
***************
1. Right-click on the Network Icon and go to properties
2. The type of Ethernet card will vary from computer to computer
3. Now, Click on the ADD button.
4. After doing so, Click on PROTOCOL to select it.
5. Once it is selected, click on the ADD button.
6. Click once on Microsoft name in the left window. Once you have done
this, scroll down in the right window until you see IPX/SPX.
7. Click once to select.
8. Once IPX/SPX is selected, click the OK button.
9. After adding IPX/SPX to your network protocols, it will show up in the
NETWORK window.
10. Click and Select IPX/SPX.
11.Once IPX/SPX selected, click on the PROPERTIES button.
12. Enable netbios over ipx/spx and then click OK

Click OK and it will demand that you restart the computer. DO IT.

Un-Binding a Protocol (we will deal with unbinding TCP/IP from file and
printer sharing)

Windows XP
**************
1. By default, Windows XP binds an installed protocol to each network
connection and service. You can remove the binding, preventing that service
from using that protocol.
2. Open the Network Connections folder and click Advanced (you will find
it up near Tools) followed by Advanced Settings.
3. To see the bindings for a connection, click the connection name under
Connections. The bindings appear under Bindings.
4. To remove a binding, un-check the corresponding box. (Like TCP/IP from
File and Printer sharing)

*For example, to use IPX/SPX instead of TCP/IP for file sharing, un-bind
TCP/IP from both File and Printer Sharing and Client for Microsoft Networks
This is good if you are dealing with a HUB (MN-150)

Windows 98
***************
1. Right-click on the Network Icon and go to properties
2. You will see "TCP/IP-> and a network card" , hightlight it and click on
properties
3. Click on the bindings tab
4. To unbind TCP/IP from the File and printer sharing, just uncheck the box
beside "File and Printer sharing for Microsoft Netowrks"
5. Click OK, and then OK again. It may ask for a restart

Note:: If this does not help, let me know if you are getting any errors
while connecting to the shares.

I too have been struggling for some time to use my Windows Me Computer and printer as a share for a home network with a Window 2000 notebook.

I tried all the different protocol configurations as suggested, but without success.

In my case the problem was the Firewall on the Windows Me computer, the IP address of the notebook is now configured as 'trusted' and the printer is now shared.
