Networking to Windows 2000 Computer

I am unable to access my old Win2000 laptop from my new WinXP(MCE) desktop.
I've created a workgroup and I am able to see both computers from both my
WinXP machine and my Win2000 machine. I can access my WinXP machine from my
Win2000 machine, but can not access my Win2000 machine from my WinXP machine.
When trying to access my Win2000 machine I am prompted with a login screen,
however the username/password for the Win2000 does not work and I receive an
error msg stating,

"xyz computer is not accessible. You might not have permissions to use
this network resource. Contact the admin of this server to find out if you
have access permissions. Logon failure: the user has not been granted the
requested logon type at this computer"

Any advice?

thanks

Create identical user accounts/passwords on both machines. Share out
desired resources and make sure permissions are set correctly. Make
sure File & Printer Sharing is enabled in the Windows Firewall or any
third-party firewall you are using.

I'm still batteling this issue. To date, I can access my old computer from
my new computer, but not vice versa. I can see my old computer from my new
one, but am still receiving the same error msg. when trying to access the
computer. Should I be prompted to enter a username/password when accessing
my old machine from my new one? (I am not prompted to do so when accessing my
new machine from my old machine.)

Thanks,
Chris

You need to create a user account and password on the Win2k box that is
identical to that on the WinXP box and that will solve the
authentication problem.

Do you have accounts with the same username and password on both?

I tried that, but perhaps I did not set it up correctly. Can you provide
some details on the steps to create accounts with the same username/password?

Thanks in advance...

I should also mention that I am attempting this through my Lynksys router.
Would the easiest solution be to just use a cross-over cable?

No, just use your router and straight-through cat5e ethernet. Go to the
XP box's Control Panel and double-click on the User Accounts applet.
Write down the name of the user accounts you have. You already know if
you set a password. If you didn't, then the password is blank. Blank
passwords can cause a problem, but leave it blank for now.

Now go to the Win2k box. The Win2k box isn't on right now, but IIRC you
make a new user account from the Administrative Tools>Computer
Management>User Management (or something like that). You can always use
Win2k's Help and type in "create new user". Now create a new user
account identical to the one on XP. Share out desired resources and
make sure you set the permissions correctly so your new user (you) will
have access. Here are some links to help you:
