Networking, Shared Files and Windows XP Problem

T

The Merg

I have a laptop and a desktop that are networked
wirelessly with both running Windows XP. On each computer
I have two users (User1 and User2). They have the
documents folder for each user shared out on each
computer. My issue is that I cannot see User2's documents
through the network. I keep getting the error message
that I do not have access and need to contact the system
admin of the networked system.

For example, on the desktop, I can connect to the laptop
and see the Shared Docs folder and User1's documents, but
not User2's documents. It does not matter if I am logged
into the desktop as User1 or User2. When on the laptop, I
can connect to the desktop and see the Share Docs folder
and User1's document, but not User2's documents. Once
again, it does not matter if I am logged into the laptop
as User1 or User2

Anyone have any idea why I cannot access User2's
documents through the network?

Thanks,
The Merg

First a simple question---do you use the same password on both
computers? That's required.

For some more information please have a look at

Merg,

Is this a domain or workgroup authenticated network?

Is each computer running XP Home or Pro? If Pro, Simple or Advanced
file sharing? Is the Guest account enabled or disabled?

What are the differences between User1 and User2 in group membership
on each computer?

Cheers,
Chuck
Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.

Is this a domain or workgroup authenticated network?

Both computers are in the HOME workgroup.

Is each computer running XP Home or Pro?

XP Home on both PCs....

Is the Guest account enabled or disabled?

Guest accounts are disabled on both PCs...

What are the differences between User1 and User2 in group
membership on each computer?

Both accounts on both PCs are considered to be
system admins. None of the user accounts has a password
associated with it. I figured I'd start off simple.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks again,

Try giving them both the same non-empty password for a test. And
do have a look at http://www.michna.com/kb/WxNetwork.htm because
it most likely contains the solution to your problem. If it
doesn't, I'd like to hear about this.

Well, I gave each account on both computers a non-empty password. I turned on the Guest accounts on both computers. I deleted and re-created the problematic share, all to no avail. Like I mentioned in one of my prior posts, I am using XP Home so I am using simple file sharing. Any other ideas on this one?

I overlooked the XP Home point. So you're saying that you can
successfully share some folders, but not a particular one. Is
that right?

Which is the folder you cannot share? Some folders, like Program
Files, cannot be shared on XP Home. Try to share subfolders.

Or change to classic file sharing.

And have a look at http://www.michna.com/kb/WxNetwork.htm.

Since I am using XP Home, I thought that I couldn't use Classic File Sharing and only had the ability to use Simple File Sharing.

Any ideas?

Yes, that is correct.

None beyond the ones already written here or in
http://www.michna.com/kb/WxNetwork.htm. If you have a new
problem that I don't know yet and find a solution, I would be
grateful to learn about it, but I think this is unlikely.

I think I figured it out....

When I shared out the "My documents" folders for User2 on both machines I was logged in as User1. Once I unshared the folders, logged in as User2 and let User2 share out its own files, everything worked. I also have a password on for both users on both machines. I don't know if the latter is needed, but since everything is working, I'm not gonna touch it.

Thanks for reporting! It was an access right issue then.

One way to solve such problems begins with logging on as a user
with administrator rights.

Not exactly though. Both User1 and User2 were administrators, yet to truely share out the "My Documents" for each user, it seems you must have the user who owns the "My Documents" folder share it out.
