Networking XP Pro Desktop and XP Pro Laptop over Linksys Router Et

Problem: difficulty networking XP Pro Desktop and XP Pro Laptop over Linksys
Router using Ethernet cables. Simple File Sharing is OFF on both machines.

I can share files in both directions using the Shared Documents folders,
provided the user name and password are identical on both machines. This is
essentially sharing with myself. Using differently named accounts, I can
share the shared documents folder but not other folders in other locations.

I've just done a fresh installation from recovery CDs on both computers.
I've also spent days trying to get file sharing to work as advertised.

I want to have USER1 on the DESKTOP share folders and files with USER2 on
the LAPTOP. I have a contact management program that has each user installed
on the two machines but shares a database located on USER1 DESKTOP, and full
control from a different user ID is required.

I am stumped. Please advise...

With simple file sharing OFF, XP Pro only grants networked access to
users who it recognizes. That requires matching user accounts (same
user name and non-empty password) on both computers.

Create an account for USER2 on DESKTOP, with the same password that
USER2 has on LAPTOP.

Check the share permissions on the shared database folder on DESKTOP,
and make sure that they give full control to the group named EVERYONE.

Thanks for your post, Steve. If tandem user accounts and passwords are
established on both the desktop and the laptop, can USER2 FROM LAPTOP access
all the files on DESKTOP which USER1 ON DESKTOP has shared with
"everyone/full control"? Specifically can USER 1 ON DESKTOP be logged in and
working while USER 2 FROM LAPTOP is also logged in and working, with both of
these people having full access to all shares the other has created with
"everyone/full control"?

The easiest way to find out is to try it and see.

I think you'll find that the answer to both questions is "Yes". :)
