I have a little problem with my home network. It consists of 1 - WinNT4 box, 1 - Win2000 box and
my main machine is a WinXP home box. All three machines are plugged into a hub. Heres my problem.
If I'm on either the NT4 box or the Win2000 box and click on network neighborhood and keep expanding
until I get to my other 2 PC's, the windows open right up. However, If I'm on my XP box and click
on my network places and keep expanding to get to my other 2 machines, each branch I click on
stalls. for a good minute or 2 before it opens up and I get the hour glass mouse pointer. All 3
machines have the same user name and password which I was told would help but it didn't. This
stalling is annoying. If I happen to hit F5 (refresh) when the network branck is expanded, it
stalls again. I was also told to try stopping the computer browser service which I did and that
didn't seem to help. Has anyone ran into this problem and found a fix ???? It would be greatly
appreciated....................... Thanks...............

There is no mix up a sander can't fix up !!! (Al Bundy)

Don't confuse stall with "takeing a really long time" which WinXP does. The
end result is can you after taking a really long time, see your other
machines the NT and the 2k on the net? If so, then you network is setup
correctly
If not, your problem my lay with your WinXP Home OS. By default, Both WinXP
Home and Pro, do not support the NetBEUI protocal. Both NT and 2K do. You
can install the NetBEUI protocal on WinXP. The files are located on you OS
CD in the Value Add folder. You must install the .inf file found in the
Value Add folder to the C:\Windows\inf folder and install the .sys file into
c:\Windows\system32\drivers. Now right mouse click on My Network Places
icon, click properties, this will open up the Network Connections box. Right
mouse click on the Lan icon and select properties, click on install and
double click on Protocols and select NetBEUI. This will install the protocol
to your machine. Close all boxes.Right mouse click on My computer, select
properties, click on the Computer Name tab and make sure you have asigned a
unique name to each machine. If not, click on the change button and name
it.Numbered machines are easyer to keep track of...also give the workgroup a
name i.e. HOMENET. The workgroup name does not have to be unique, but again,
it helps keep track of the workgroups. You now should be able to double
click on My Network Places on your WinXP Home machine, double click on View
workgoup computers and see all the machines on your net. BTW, Win2k has My
Network Places, not Network Neighbornood like NT.
Hope this helps.

Also, you can use the w2k netbeui files instead of the xp netbeui files. It
performs much better than xp's version and can really help minimize the time in
the browsing service. The two files you need are netnbf.inf and nbt.sys from any
w2k machine or cd.
