Don't know if this is the right place to post this but
this is my question: I want to use my old computer on my
network but don't know how to do it since it does not have
a monitor. How can this be done and how would you be able
to setup the old unit without a monitor?

What needs to be done - please help - I am a pc dummy in
this area.

Thanks

Give up; buy a monitor. In the past year, I have purchased two
used monitors for $30 each.

You don't need a monitor to run a PC. Set it up using
your existing monitor and then install a remote control
package such as WinVNC (www.realvnc.com) to control it.
But if cost is the only reason for going without a
monitor then I'd pick up a cheap one and save yourself
the hassle - if space is an issue then you could use a
KVM switch box (Keyboard/Video/Mouse) and share the
monitor.
