I have a router that I successfully config to share internet with my cable
modem with Win XP Home and Win 98. However, I can't config the two machines
to share files. Any suggestions on a quick way to network these two
computers. Secondly, do I need additional software so the XP and 98 can
share files? I heard it can be done with the software built-in XP Home, but
the help section is not much help because I can't get it to work.

I'm open for suggestions....

Ah, on the XP computer....

Start -> Control Panel -> Network Connections -> Local Area Connection
-> Properties -> `General` tab -> Select `Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)`
from the list of protocols -> Properties -> Advanced -> `WINS` tab.

On the `WINS` settings make sure that `Enable NETBIOS over TCP/IP` is
enabled.

That's one culprit that I've come across quita a lot.

I did that with no success. I probably did something wrong. I did a lot of
"trial and error" and may have did something I wasn't suppose to. Could you
please tell me who the network configuration suppose to be setup?

Thanks.

Is the router firewalled? If not then I wouldn't be too worried about
networking the 2 computers until it is.

You can find some pretty cheap 4 port ones for sharing your cable
connection nowadays.

I meant to say.."How the network config is suppose to be setup?" By the
way, I pinged the both computers to one another and they both responds.

thanks.

It's firewalled, but I can see the 98 comp from my XP comp, but I can't
access it. If it's a firewall problem, how do I fix that?

Depends on the hardware your running. What kind of router do you have?
What kind of firewall? Software and/or hardware?

You don't need any third-party software. Basically, you need to create
an account on the XP box that is identical to the one on the Win98 box
(for authentication). You need to share out some resources. Since I
don't know what you've already tried, I can't be more specific. Here
are some sites that have all the information you need to set up a home
network:

Thanks for the info, but those sites are info overload. I'm going to have
to sit down and sort through that stuff (why does it has to be so complex).
Like I said before, I managed to have the internet sharing through the
router, but not the files.

Find your model. Download the User Guide & the Quick Install Guide.

You'll need Adode Acrobat Reader to view the files.

Malke,

Thank you for your help. I'm getting closer...(smile). My XP computer can
now see the Win98 machine. However, I can't access or see any files on the
Win98 machine. I went into the Win98 machine to try to "add" files or share
it, but was unsucessful. Any help here???

I finally figured it out. Thank you all for the personal emails and
newsgroup postings.

see ya....until the next crisis....(smile)!
