That seems like the most likely problem but you'll need
to make sure that the old laptop is in the same workgroup
as the new one i'd have thought, but that might lead to
other problems and is only something to be aware of IF
you have the correct cable and they're still not talking

Thanks for your replies chaps.

I think it may be the cable - I've a crossover coming from Ebay tomorrow
which will hopefully sort it.

Great links Chuck - thanks a lot. V helpful.

Hello again -

one final problem I cant seem to figure out.

I now have the two machines connected via LAN with the crossover cable. They
can see each other and the slave machine can receive email - but I get a 403
Error when I try to browse the net.

I thought this might be a firewall problem, but disabling the software
firewalls doesnt seem to make a difference, so might it be another
configuration problem?

If anyone can shed any light on it I'd be most grateful.

Thanks a lot.

Matt,

Define the scope of the problem please.

From each computer:
From a command window:
1) Ping www.yahoo.com.
2) Ping 66.94.230.33.
Report success / exact text of error messages.

From your browser:
3) Browse www.yahoo.com.
4) Browse 66.94.230.33.
Report success / exact text of error messages.

Cheers,
Chuck
Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.

Chuck - thanks very much for your help and your recommendations.

However, I have found the problem.

Like a dumbass, I had inadvertantly ticked the "use a proxy server" checkbox
in my LAN settings. How silly do I feel.... All is now working fine and dandy.

Thanks again for your help.

Congrats, Matt. Glad you figured it out. And thanks for updating us too - not
everybody will admit when they cause the reported problem.

Cheers,
Chuck
