sorry for the duplicate post, but i have no idea how far back people go and
look...

i have two win2000 machines
both on my home network
so both on the same side of my home router

i have TCP, CLIENT FOR MS NETWORKS and FIEL AND PRINTER SHARING enabled....

i was told to make sure netbuei was not enabled. i am guessing it is not,
since i cannot find that setting anywhere.

both machiens have the same name for the WORKGROUP and do NOT belong to any
domain....

yet they wont see each other.....and yes, both connect to the internet, both
have drives set to sharing....pelase help me

i have the same problem... i have a windows NT4 and a windows2000 server. both are installed as STAND ALONE SERVERS. they can't see each other yet they are on the same network and workgroup. they don't belong to any domains. i think the network neighboorhood properties are complete as i can access both servers in all of my NTworkstations. what do you think?

1st. Name Resolution. Computers do not understand words only numbers. When
you type www.microsoft.com your computer needs to turn this into a Number
such as 198.186.1.234. Win2k uses DNS and Win9x uses WINS. (And MACS, I
believe want to use DNS as well, although don't quote me). Unless you have
a method of name resolution setup for "Your Network" (not your ISPs DNS)
the machines are not going to find the info they need.
The machines are querying your ISPs DNS for your local network info. But
of course your ISP has no such information.
With out a method of Name Resolution for "Your Network" the machines will
not "see" each other. You can however connect by IP address rather then
Name.
Or you may want to check out HOSTS or LMHOSTS as an option.

2nd.you have to setup "Shares" on the target machine that the other machines
can access.

I finally got it to work.

I took both computers, and made them part of a domain: DANIELHOME then
I renamed each computer DANIELDESK and DANIELLAPTOP. I did this so that
everythign woudl be fresh and re-written.

Then they saw each other but wouldn't open each other's drives. So I did
the same the for the drive sharing. I went and reshared both drives, and
TADA!

YOU CAN FIND DISABLING OPTION OF NETBIOS OVER TCP/IP IN ADVANCED SETTINGS OF TCP/IP PROPERTIES

If that works, it works for all the wrong reasons.

Put the machines back on the workgroup and describe exactly what problem
you're having.
