Heya all. i have a LINKSYS WIRELESS-G ADSL GATEWAY. I am running a Desktop
pc (via ethernet) and laptop (wireless) thro it for internet connection.

All is well and both are on XP. How do i get the 2 computers to share files

Both PCs are XP, right? The web-site has a step-by-step XP networking
walk-thru.

What's the issue?

It's easy, and there's no need to refer to a guide or web site.

Run the Network Setup Wizard on both computers, and tell it that they
connect to the Internet through a residential gateway. It will make
all the right settings.

Then, right-click and share the desired disks and folders on each
computer. The other computer will see them in My Network Places.

If they don't appear right away in My Network Places, wait a few
minutes, or type the other computer's name in the Start | Run box in
this format:

\\computer

Cheers but it didnt work. When i go thro the process on the wireless LAPTOP.
it says that the realtek card is disconnected, and do i want to ignore this
and continue. I say YES as its a wireless laptop where the internet
connection is working fine on it.

I set up the wizzard on both as u said, and went into my c drive and found a
file i wanted to share, and shared it. But nothing. When i go to LOOK FOR
COMPUTERS ON THE NETWORK, it wont find the other laptop's name.

Any more help?

I have just established a home network using the same set up as you have and
had the same problem. I followed all wizards used flash drives etc etc but
could not get the two computers to see each other on the network although
internet connection was fine. I am using norton internet security and it
appears that the firewall on my desktop was blocking the network. I went into
firewall - netwiorking- and then enterd a TCPip range under the allow
section. The TCPIP addresses can be found in the LINKSYS wireless settings
section goto your linksys set up screen and find teh section under wireless
setup you will see that it allocates tcpip addresses over a range of about
100, you can reduce this oif you wish as your only using two computers (
don't forget to allow for any other wireless devisces such as printers.)
write doown the number range and input into the virus firewall allow section.
You should see your computers now in my network places -show workgroup
computers. You now need to set up shared folders. Decide which folders you
wish to share right click on them and select shared ditto with your printer.
Good luck.

Hi,

It's easy to share files with Windows. All you do is right click on the
folder you want to share and click share. Set up the preferences and
settings. Once that is done you should be able to go to My network Places
and then open up the entire network and look for the machine and you should
see the shared folder. If you need more specific directions, reply back.

FRED!!

OK, I turned NORTON security off and it set up fine, But as soon as both are
back on (on both computers) i cannt access the computers. The Folders are
still there, but it says something about permissions. Turn norton off, and
all is fine.

Iwent into the lINKSYS screen, but could not find what u were typing.

Can u go thro it for me Step by step.

Nice 1

Lepp,

Do yu have two network connections on the laptop? Dual connections work great
with Windows XP - for outgoing connections, where the laptop can automatically
switch between whichever connection is available, and advantageous, at the time.

For incoming connections, like for file sharing, its not so simple. What
happens if the other computer thinks the laptop is reachable thru (resolves
address to) the connection not active at any time (maybe the Realtek)?

Then you factor in the browser situation. Check for a browser conflict between
the computers. I"m not talking about Internet Explorer here. The browser is the
program that allows any computer to see any other computer on the LAN. For a
two computer LAN, the browser should be running on just one of the computers.

Make sure the browser service is running on the desktop computer. Control Panel
- Administrative Tools - Services. Verify that the Computer Browser, and the
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper, services both show with Status = Started. Stop, then
Disable the browser on the laptop computer.

After checking / disabling / enabling as above, power all computers off to reset
the browser settings on each. Then power the Windows XP computers on, and
finally the Windows 98 and ME computers on.

The Microsoft Browstat program will show us what browsers (I'm not talking about
Internet Explorer here) you have in your domain / workgroup, at any time.
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=188305

You can download Browstat from either:
<http://www.dynawell.com/reskit/microsoft/win2000/browstat.zip>
<http://rescomp.stanford.edu/staff/manual/rcc/tools/browstat.zip>

Browstat is very small (40K), and needs no install. Just unzip the downloaded
file, copy browstat.exe to any folder in the Path, and run it from a command
window, by "browstat status". Make sure all computers list the same master
browser.
For more information about the browser subsystem (very intricate), see:
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=188001
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=188305
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=231312
<http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winntas/deploy/prodspecs/ntbrowse.mspx>

Please provide browstat information for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "browstat status >c:\browstat.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\browstat.txt in Notepad, make sure that Format - Word Wrap is
NOT checked!, copy and paste into your next post. Identify each computer by
name and operating system.

Also, provide ipconfig information for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, make sure that Format - Word Wrap is
NOT checked!, copy and paste entire contents into your next post.

Ok

Goto Linksys site 192.168.1.1

then setup screen should open under bsic set up page if not select that.

Scrolll down page should see on left networksetup address server settings
(DCHP)

make sure enabled is selected

box shows starting IP sddress maybe 192.168.1.100

and then next box says number of addresses you need sufficient for all teh
connecting components of your home network ( i've selected 5)

When you put a number in here the range underneath will change .

make a note of the starting address and the last address ( from -to)
You need these to put into your Norton security file.

Don't forget to click SAve settings at the bottom!

Open Norton internet security select personnel firewall

select networking tab

select trusted box and click add

select using a range

then type in the numbers you wrote down earlier
something like 192 .168.1.100 and then 192.168.1.105 or whatever number
range you chose.
OK

Now you should have given access through your firewallfor your two computers
to communicate and you should see them when you click my network places show
workgroup computers.

You will still not be able to access anything on each computer until you set
up sharred folders .

You must decide how much access you want each computer to have with each
other . To make My documents folder for example right click my docs and
select sharing and select the over network option.

Same process for printers right click printer icon select sharing etc etc.

Good luck

( away until Sat now so can't help any more)

It's not gibberish and if you can't follow the steps then sell your
computers to someone with some knowledge.
