networking 2 computers and cant ping

T

Tim Coates

I have a networking problem where 2 computers cannot see each other. My
configuration is:

o Cable modem goes into Win2000 box.
o Win2000 also has internal network card into hub
o Win2000 PC has no problems browsing the internet
o On Win2000 PC, I can ping both the internal and external network card
o 2nd cable connects the laptop to the hub
o On the hub all leds are green for both the Win200 PC and laptop

I also have a laptop running Win NT4 that I also use at work. I have no
problems with laptop and networking at work. When the laptop is at home, I
have to change the workgroup and IP address settings to match the Win2000
PC.

The problem is that neither PC can see each other. When I try to ping I get
error 'request timed out" all the time. Viewing activity on the hub the
LINK/ACT blinks each time the PC send out a packet. However there is no
response from the other PC. For example, if Win2000 pings the laptop the
LINK/ACT led blinks on the port the port the Win2000 is connected to, but
not the led for the connection to the laptop. If I ping from the laptop the
same errors occurs but the other way around. The message seems to get 1/2
ways and then stops.

There are no errors in the windows event log and checking the status of the
network cards (via control panel reports no problems).

When I try to browse the network via 'my network places', it takes a long
time to get a response. I also get error:

Jonjon is not accessible.
The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available.

(Jonjon is the name of the workgroup)

I have included the output of ipconfig /all from both the Win2000 PC and
laptop. If any components need to be reinstalled, can steps be provided
also.

Thanks in advance,
Tim C

Check the bindingorder of your nics in Network Connections, Advanced,
advanced. The internal nic should be on top.
All computers should be in the same workgroup and all useraccounts should
exist on all W2K-boxes.

DNS on your laptop doesn't look right. It should be pointing to your gateway
(192.168.0.1).
