networked printers/scanner

i have a small office setup using using three printers, one of which is also
a scanner. currently, each of the three networked computers has a printer
connected directly to them and the other users on the network can access any
printer via windows networking (e.g. jane can print directly to the printer
connected to her computer or she can print to "canon on diane" via the
network).

the printer that is also a scanner can only be controlled for scanning by
the computer that it is directly connected to (e.g. open adobe acrobat,
select scan, the scanner automatically activates and the pdf is made on that
computer. how can i set up so that any of the computers on the network can
use acrobat to scan directly to their respective computers? does a printer
server provide that for me? is there one that allows 3 or 4 printers to be
hooked up?

Gernerally, you cannot, unless the required multiuser software was furnished
with the multifunction unit.
Some (HP & Brother for example,) sell this capability as a software option
on some models.
