Mister Ree

Hello:

I have one PC on my peer-to-peer network that is inaccessible by all
others, yet this one can access the rest of the LAN. The workgroup is
of the same name, of course.

I cannot see the contents in "My Network Places->Entire
Network->Microsoft Windows Network->{groupname}->{PC name}". I get the
error message:

"... is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this
network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out
if you have access permissions.

Access is denied."

Obviously, I cannot use this particular PC's printer either (a color
printer).

Can anyone offer any insight?

Thanks for your time.

Cheers.

Did you run the XP Network Setup Wizard on that machine? If yes, did you
make sure that all security software and any firewalls were disabled while
running the wizard? If yes, during the wizard, users asked how this
computer connects to the Internet. An incorrect response can result in the
symptoms you describe. Usually, the "Gateway" response will get you going.

Does this one have the same user ID/password set up as all the others?

Michael:

Thanks for your reply.

I re-did the XP Network Setup Wizard:
1. I uninstalled the NIC via the "System Properties->Device
manager->Device Manager"
2. I uninstalled McAfee virusscan (you were right about that one!)

I re-installed upon reboot, but I get the same results. That is, I
*DO* get access to the Internet and other PC's on my LAN. The IP is
dynamic (obtain IP etc. setting). Nothing looks wrong from this PC
itself. It's just accessing it from my other PC's.

Do you, or anyone else, have other suggestions? I even tried disabling
the built-in NIC and adding a PCI one with the same results (going
through the same steps).

Thanks again for your time.

Cheers.

GSV:

No, it didn't. So, I added the missing ID (no password) on the PC in
question. I was still unsuccessful.

Note, most of my other PC's did NOT have the same ID as the problem
PC, yet I could access them from the aforementioned PC.

Thanks for the suggestion, anyway.

Are they any other suggestions out there?

Cheers.

Do you have the 'guest' account enabled on this PC? (and on the
others??).

Be sure you have assigned a password to the user on the troublesome pc
and log in with it.

TMiaC:

No "guest" ID is enabled across any of the PC's. I can try turning it
on to see what happens.

Thanks.

If it's not enabled on any of them, then that isn't the difference
between them that we're looking for. 8<,

All:

Progress!...

What I have done is to create the same user of the problem PC as on my
other PC's.

I can now share the printer. Geat! I still haven't figured out how to
*access* this problem PC's files, yet.

Thanks for your help so far. Are there any other suggestions?

Please advise.

Cheers.
