Network trouble after xp installation

I have an older dell xps desktop that was running XP, and got a virus on it.
I wiped the HD, started with a new install of 98. Once in 98, all drivers
were loaded and worked fine, including the network card.

I then did an install of XP, where it went through the normal paces, and
accessed the microsoft site for the latest drivers. Once it finally finished
intallation, the network card will not access any part of the network, or the
internet. I've tried a good card from another computer, updating the drivers,
repacing the cable, just about everything. It will access the internet and
the network in 98, showing no problems.

I have four other computers that access the web and the netowrk with no
troubles, but this one is very frustrating. Any and all relevant advice will
be more than helpful!!

You should not use drivers from Windows Update. They often cause
problems. Go to Dell's support website for your specific model computer
and download the drivers from there. Uninstall the drivers for the
network card you've got.

The card shows that it's active in the device manager, with no problems, with
the newest driver. When I go into network neighborhood and view the
properties of the connection, it shows it's connected at 10.0 Mbps with no
packets sent or received. This has been very frustrating, since there dosen't
seem to be a reason why it works to begin with then after the installation it
quits.

Well, since the NIC works in Win98 and not in XP, it is logical to
assume that 1) the drivers are no good - which you could have easily
troubleshot by doing what I suggested and installing the drivers that
were written for the device from Dell; or 2) the old computer is
overheating and hardware is failing after it has been on for a while in
which case you could swap the NIC out for a known-working one (under
$20usd for a new one).

I tried a new linksys card last night with no better results. The only change
that I noted was this new card shows connected at 100Mbps, but still no
activity and no packets sent or received. I even tried installing the card in
a different PCI slot, and manually configuring the settings.
