I have a question about the network connection status icon in the taskbar
tray, do i really need to have it there or is it necessary for my connection
to run properly?? It's the local area connection status icon and I have a
DSL connection

The icon is not needed for to run a network.

Follow the below steps:

1. Click Start, run, type "ncpa.cpl" (with out quotation marks) and click
OK.
2. In the resulting window, right-click on the Local Area Connection icon
and click properties.
3. In the resulting window, below the General tab, uncheck "Show icon in
notification area when connected" option.

double-click on the icon itself, shoose Properties and
uncheck the box that says "show icon in notification area".
That's easier than all the Start->Run stuff

that didn't work either and by the way the box for "show icon in notification
area" was already unchecked, of course it's still in the taskbar tray.

Hi,
This should do it. It worked for me. Start | Control Panel | Network and
Internet Connections | Network Connections |LAN or High-Speed Internet |
Right Click Local Area Connection | Click Disable | Exit. It should now be
gone from the tray.

that's not going to work because it disables my DSL connection, so i guess
that means that there is no way that i could remove it from the tray?

You may have two network connections if you also run a LAN. Make sure
that you disable the icon for the correct connection. This works well
for me here, BTW.
