Network Shares for larger hardrives.

I have 2 PC's on my home network. Both running XP and connected via a
wireless hub (sharing a DSL connection).

Everything works fine, except for one thing!!!

I can network share all my smaller hardrives (80 gig), but not my larger
ones (160 gig plus). I have shared them out exactly as the smaller drives,
but when I try to access them, I get the famous "You Might not have
permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this
server to find out if you have access permissions." message.

Why can I share out the smaller drives without any problems, but not the
larger ones?

I have Norton Firewall and AntiVirus on both PCs (am not using windows
firewall).

Is it a Windows thing where is can't share out larger capacity drives?

Both PCs are running XP Pro with service pack 2 installed. Norton Antivirus
and Firewall 2002.

Are you using simple filesharing ?
I don't use it personally (like to see actual permissions).

To access a share make sure:

1) The permissions of the share itself are correct
Right click share in explorer and get select 'Sharing and Security'. Then
click on Permissions tab. Do you see Everyone and do they have at least read
access ?

2) Check the permission of the folder the share is pointing to.
Right-click the folder and select Properties. Click on the Security tab and
then Advanced button. Click on Add and add the user 'Everyone'. Give that
user account rights (e.g. Full control) and then click on. Put a tick in the
'Replace permissions entries on all child .....". Click OK.

That should work

)

Thanks for the info. I tried that and it didn't do anything. Still getting
the same error message??

Try creating a test directory and then share it out.
Give Everyone Full control to the Share and the actual directory (file
permissions).

Does that work ?

Can you be more specific about the error message?

The bit that goes:
"You Might not have permission to use this network resource.
Contact the administrator of this
server to find out if you have access permissions."

is just boilerplate pre-amble.

This tells us nothing about the actual error.

The ACTUAL error is on the next line.
It will give a specific error message like:

"acces denied"
or
"path not found"
or
"Not enough server storage.."

Now, given that you have Norton, I'm guessing you are seeing
the "Not enough server storage.." error. Am I right?

If so, post back. It's an easy fix.

Yup, tried exactly what you just recommended and still the same error
message?:

Huh?

I didnt recommend anything.

I asked for more information, like the EXACT error message.

I think we may have posted at the same time. I was replying to the posting
above your one (the one about creating a test share). It just got confused I
guess.

But yes you are right, I am getting the "Not enough server storage.." error.

I incremented the "IRPStackSize" value in the registry by 3 and still nothing.

I got a friend to try the drive on his PC and share it out and it worked
fine. So it's some dodgy setting on my PC.

I've managed to fix the problem. I un-installed Norton AntiVirus, then
re-installed it. Did all the relevant updates and then changed the
IPRStackSize to 25. All other values do not work, but 25 does for some weird
reason.

Anyhows it works now (for the time being).

Thanks for your suggestion guys.
