Network share permissions in P2P ?

I recently upgraded the O/S on my office file server from WinME to XPPro only
to learn that setting network share permissions is not possible in XP in P2P
environment. All I need to do is create one folder for each user, in
addition to the common data folders that is not accessible by other users on
the network. I've been told by Microsoft Support twice now (I didn't believe
them the first time) that this is not possible with XP unless logging onto a
domain. Can this possibly be true? With all the cool new things XP can do I
just can't believe they would remove one of the most usefull features Windows
has had since Win95. Is there anyway at all to restrict access to network
shares without setting up a domain, and if not, where can I get information
(that even a simpleton like myself can understand) about how I might go about
that if it is my only option . . .
Thanks in advance for any assistance

You don't need a domain.

The difference between ME and XP is that on
ME, you set up a password for the share.
XP doesnt work like that. The share permissions are set up per-user.

What you need to do is set up user accounts on the XP machine,
one for each person who will access the shared folders.

Then turn off Simple File Sharing.

Then create the folders, and set the share permissions
for the users you wish to access the share.

Here's a walk-through on the procedure:

That is precisely what I was hoping to hear Ron, thank you.
You've saved what little sanity I have left.
