Network Security Admin Problem

K

Kimberly Weinberg

I have Followed Access Security FAQ step 1 exactly inorder
to protect my networked database with multiple users. I am
trying to keep other users from logging on as exclusive
because no mdw file has been established. Am I totally
stupid? Help

I am unable to change the mdw files after they are
created so that my user name and password are the only
Admins.

I can't get beyond creating the new user, putting it in
Admins and Users Group and removing old Admins from the
Admins group. When I close access and attempt to open the
database it will ask for tho initial user name and but the
new password.

I have created many mdw files, deleted them, and have
little luck changing them in design view.

Somewhere along the line you're missing a step. Following the Security FAQ
can be tricky, but Lynn Trapp has a simplified version of how to secure a
database on her site:

http://www.ltcomputerdesigns.com/The10Steps.htm

She's also got a couple of links to other sites that may help you. I
encourage you to try this on a COPY of your database ...

That would be....'his site'.

I have attempted the summarized version and at her step 6
I am unable to remove the admin user, there is no way to
highlight the selected changes. Any ideas?

You cannot remove the Admin user, just as you cannot delete the Users group
.... instead, make sure that the Admin user has no explicit permission and
isn't a member of any group. Of course, you can't remove the Admin user from
the Users group (all users are irrevocably members of the Users group), but
you can remove all permissions from the Users group. Also, make sure to
change ownership of the database ... there is a document on Lynn Trapp's
site regarding the DB Owner and how to change it.
