I have 5 computers all on a wireless network, since upgrading to XP SP2 (on
all) the XP Pro machine can be Pinged and can be found in the workgroup but
when any of the computers tries to access its shared docs etc I get the
message:
"\\Laptop is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this
network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you
have network permissions."

This was fine before installing SP2.

I have tried:
Enabling Simple File/Printer Sharing
Shutting down and removing Zone Alarm and windows firewalls
Enabling the guest account
Checking the node type (Hybrid)
Setting the security so non-passworded users can access
Enabling the computer browser service

Any help would me much appreciated.

if disable ICF, can you access it?

I have tried disabling that and its still the same, I can see the computer
but cant access it.

try this command net view \\hostname, if it is error 53, this is name
resolution issue; if it is error 5, this is permission error.

Alex,

Zone Alarm is a good tool for protection (especially since it's free), but, if
not configured properly, can cause problems with file sharing. And disabling it
does not always eliminate those problems.

You need to either un install it, totally, using instructions from Zone Labs
<http://nh2.nohold.net/noHoldCust25/Prod_1/Articles55646/CompleteUninstallNonNT.html>

Or, you need to configure it properly. With ZA Free, this means identifying
your subnet as a Trusted Network.

Unfortunately, if you have multiple problems causing your inability to share
files, you'll have more work to do. In your case, un installing ZA, using the
above link, may be the best start. Then report here, describing any changes in
symptoms, and we'll decide what to do next.

Cheers,
Chuck

Thanks for the help guys, I have fixed it now, I switched off simple file
sharing on the XP Pro machine and then created users on that machine with
blank passwords, the usernames being the same as on the other computers on
the network. Now when I access the XP Pro machine I connect with the
corresponding username and no problems.

Only downside is each computer/logon I use has to then have a account on the
XP Pro machine.

Cheers.

Alex,

That's one disadvantage of Advanced File Sharing, and Workgroup Authentication.
With x number of users, and the hassle of maintaining users (and changing
passwords) on multiple computers, you are encouraged to setup a domain
controller.

One additional setting occurs to me. Check your Local Security Policy (Control
Panel - Administrative Tools) - User Rights Assignment, on the XP Pro computer,
and look at "Deny access to this computer from the network". Is Guest in that
list?

Cheers,
