network path name was not found

I'm running windows 2000.
I'm connected to a LAN and can view all the machines
connected to it and can access every file server except
one. When I try to connect to it I get "network path was
not found". If I ping the name of the machine I get
nothing unless I include it in the hosts file. I really
know very little about networking in Windows so simple
step by step help would be appreciated. Thanks.
 
please check the protocols and services installed on that server with
others.
