I recently purchased a desktop that had XP pro on it. I turn on the computer
and it asks me for a network user name and password. I do not possess the
user name or password. How can I reset the username and password?

Go to http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/ and download the boot
disk, this will enable you to reset any system password on an NT class
operating system.

Personally if I bought a used PC I would completely reinstall XP
because you do not know what sort of nasties may be present. If you
decide to do this then make sure you have your XP CD, Product key,
motherboard drivers CD, driver disks for your graphics card and any
other drivers for the installed devices, all of these should have been
provided by the seller.

With second-hand computers, especially if acquired from strangers
but perhaps even if acquired from a family member, your wisest course
of action would probably be to format the hard drives and start fresh.
You don't want to get in trouble because the original owner may have
filled the hard drive with kiddie porn, or have problems because the
original owner downloaded/installed viruses or other malware.

Otherwise, ask the person/company from whom you purchased the computer.
