Network on ME machine cuts out

Hello
I had a successful network set up (or so I thought) between my main computer
XP SP2 and another machine using WinME. The network is created by a network
cable running between the two computers and I used the WinXP Network Setup
Wizard on my XP machine to network them.
This was initially successful and internet pages download perfectly well but
after a limited amount of time the network connection seems to fail and all I
get is 'page cannot be displayed' errors.
After rebooting the WinME machine the network works OK for a while and
internet pages download perfectly well but then collapses again after a
limited amount of time.
The internet/email access on my XP machine is fine and unaffected by this
problem. Anyone offer any suggestions please? Thanks

I hate to tell you but ME is the worst at networking OS, MS has ever made!
Save the time and Heart ache and upgrade it to XP Pro or 2000 Pro.
I had my boss buy 15 ME laptops as gifts to use in the office one year
_after wiping away the tears after so many unexplained network drops I
upgraded everyone to 2000Pro (at the time) and all was well.
I know this is not the answer you really want to see, but I think many will
give you te same advice.

Thanks for the advice but I have had a reliable network running between the
two computers previously however system faults (due to nephew/niece playing
about) on the WinME machine caused me to format the disk and reinstall WinME.
It is only a small machine and wouldn't be capable of running XP. I have
used Win98 and Win98SE but I don't like these as they are full of annoying
bugs.
Thanks anyway

AW,

Sorry for my disregard for ME but I had these issues everyday.
I just read your original post again and is it only the internet giving you
problems?
disable any firewall software on your ME machine see if you can connect.
Proxy setting?
I think it is difficult to trouble shoot this without details about what you
are doing when it happens or some road to go down. Does this happen only
after you have been to pages or can you first leave the computer on for some
time and then try to get online succesfully?
Do you have any wireless parts to your network?
2.4 Ghz drop connection quite often dew to other common electronic devices.

At present I have no AV software on the ME machine but I will add this if
the network is restored. The ME machine is configured to be routed through my
Norton Firewall on the XP machine (Windows Firewall is disabled). The ME
machine is not to be used for mail it is for internet access only. The
network is only live for a short period when I turn the ME machine on and
displays web pages properly however after a short period of time I get the
'page can not be displayed' error on every page I try to view. There are no
wireless parts on any of the computers.
One thing I should mention is that my mate gave me instructions on how to
network the two computers which works for him ever time. This failed on my
network however and I then used the WinXP wizard. Could the two different
connection methods cause a conflict somewhere?
Thanks
Andrew
