Can't network two WinXP Machines

G

Guest

I took your advice Chuck and started a new thread.

I had two computers networked and working well. One was a Gateway running
winXP and the other was an IBM running winME. I added a new Dell running
winXP and the network saw it until I ran the network wizard. Now the Dell is
not recognized as part of the network, however, it can connect to the
internet. I turned off the winME machine, no help. I turned off the windows
firewall and reran the network wizard, no change.

Any Ideas?

Allen,

If you have 3 computers, all able to connect to the Internet, then there at
least is no connectivity problem. When you mention Windows ME and XP in the
mix, I'll bet that you have a Windows 9x / NT browser conflict.

Thanks for the quick reply, Chuck. I suspected the winme machine too. So I
turned off it's power, shouldn't that resolve any problem of mixing xp and me?
I'd like to delete the network and start over with the two xp machines only,
but I can't find a way to delete a network. Any ideas on that?

I've noticed that when I click "start" there is no "My network places" line
on the Dell. The Gateway has that line. I thought I might need to install
more of windows but that didn't change anything.

Allen,

When you change anything involving the browser, it can take as long as 51
minutes to automatically show up on every computer. You can hasten any changes
showing up, if you restart all computers, after you disable / enable the browser
as necessary.

Don't power anything off, that won't tell you anything. But read the articles,
and follow their instruction:

Hi Chuck
I turned off the winme machine and created a new network under a new name
with the Gateway, and Dell machines (both are winxp). The Gateway machine
sees only itself in the network. The Dell machine gives the "accessed
denied" message when I try to look at the network from the Dell machine.

I am now going through your Troubleshooting Network Neighborhood paper and
will be back.

Thanks again for your help.

<SNIP IPConfig indicating the presence of IPV6 drivers aka Teredo Tunneling>

Allen,

You have IPV6, aka Teredo Tunneling, on the computers. Do you really need IPV6?
It is known here to cause problems with Network Neighborhood, and File Sharing.
Please start by removing it from both computers. If you really want it, you can
put it back after you get file sharing working.

Hi Chuck,

SUCCESS -- I turned off the firewall included with the Norton product that
came with the computer. I didn't even know it was there. Network now works
fine.

Thanks a million for your time and help.
