Network help...Please

I have an use an AOL 512k broadband connection, which
uses a BT voyager 100 usb modem. The ADSL line connects
to this modem and the modem connects into a usb port on
the computer. This is all working fine.
I purchased 2 x pci network cards and a rj45 crossover
lead installed them and connected the computers together
with the rj45 crossover lead.
I have two pc's running XP Pro.
The pc with the modem attached is to be my host computer.
When I run through the networking wizard I select
the "connect to internet option", it then tells me to
select the connection I want to use from a list. The
broadband BT voyager connection is not listed, only a
pppoe connection. If i select it and finish the wizard, i
get a "no internet connection found"
Where am I going wrong. I have been informed by the
people that sold the network card that I should be able
to network them together and wouldn't need a router to
link two computers for one to share the others internet
connection?

It's because you are using the USB for internet access. Your host computer
MUST have two NIC cards, one connected to the Internet and the other to
connect to the other machine. The wizard will only allow you to network two
computers and share internet access with the above configuration.

If I have two nic's on the host, one connects the other
computer. yeah? At the moment the modem is conected to
the phone line by RJ45 and the output of the modem to the
computer is a USB lead. How is the other NIC card
connected?
Can you explain why the USB internet access is not seen
by the network?

Because that is the way that Windows handles it;s networking. USB
connections were not supported when the code was written, and to be honest,
there are not many people who use a USB Internet connection versus an
Ethernet connection. You could solve your problem with some type of router
that would support your current configuration, but I am unaware of any
models that will do it. If you do not want to use a router, then you will
have to install another NIC in the main box.

Thanks Bobby. I thought this might be the case and have a
ethernet router modem (4 port ADSL Modem / Router from
Maplin order code A12BF) in mind to do the job. I had
been talking to someone who was insisting that what I was
trying to do was possible althouth I couldn't really se
how it would work!!! Thanks again..
