Sharing BT broadband connection

Hello all, tonight i made the foolish mistake of doing a 'quick favour' for a
family memeber. I was asked to network 2 computers together so internet and
printers could be shared, no problem there, 5 minute job.....read on!!!
I configured both PC's (both Windows XP laptops) with static IP addresses,
connected them through a crossover ethernet cable and run the home network
connection wizard ( as i have done a thousand times with my own PC's may i
add, always different when a family memeber asks you to do that one quick
favour but hey!!) I have connected the PCs, can share printers and files and
see each other on the network, however i am unable to share internet
connections.

UPnP is enabled as an exception on the Windows firewall and the connection
is shared. The host machine can connect no problems but the other machine
gets nothing, Internet explorer just displays 'Page cannot be displayed' We
are using a BT broadband connection through a USB modem (BT Voyager 105)

Any information/suggestion would be great because I am pulling my hair out,
especially as i have never experienced this problem before.....I feel like
such an end user!!!
Thanks
Luke

Don't assign a static IP address to either computer. Let XP's Network
Setup Wizard handle the details.

Configure the one that has the Internet connection as an ICS host.
Configure the other one as an ICS client. I've written a web site
with full details:

Hi, thanks for your response......however the plot thickens and after a good
nights sleep I am now thinking clearly...

She has a network connection setup for work, where she has an IP address
assigned to her. Is there any way i can set up a home network with internet
connection sharing, using an ethernet cable? she also uses an ethernet cable
at work and she has txed today to say she has no network places or emails
D'oh.... I am assuming it is something to do with the fact that the wizard
asked to set a workgroup name or something which defaultred to MSHOME on both
laptops. so this in effect has not created a new network connection, it has
just modified her current one so it no longer points to her domain.

Do you have any ideas?
Luke

Hi
I have a similar problem - I have a number of PCs on a small peer-to-peer
network. Each PC has a static IP so that I can share resources over the
network.
However, I have been keen to share an internet connection with some of these
PCs but if I remove the static IPs (as you and the Windows help files
suggest) and dynamically allocate IPs to each of these clients - will I still
be able to share resources over the network?

My firewall has each of the static IP addresses defined presuming the IPs
are dynamically assigned in ascending order I can stipulate a range of IPs
for which the firewall sees as trusted nodes...???

One further thing, not all of these PCs should be able to use the Internet
connection - how do I prevent users from using this connection when it is
shared on the host computer short of removing all shortcuts to IE etc.???

Thank you for any help you can give.

Regards
Guy
