Network groups

Hi there.

What I would like to know is, is it possible to have different network groups set up on a LapTop? My son connects to MSHOME when at home , so he can use my printer, scanner and back up his machine to one of my desk tops and when at boarding school to MACROOM for all his school work and game play.

Any ideas, my son say's that it is possible but doesn't know how to do it.

Cheers,
Andre'

Andre,

These programs let you store multiple network configurations on your computer,
and switch between them easily:

NetSwitcher
http://www.netswitcher.com

MultiNetwork Manager
http://www.globesoft.com/mnm_home.html

That said, if the userid you're using on the laptop, configured as a member of
MSHOME, is acceptable to the computers in MACROOM, you'll still be able to
access resources in MACROOM. And if the userid you're using on the laptop,
configured as a member of MACROOM, is NOT acceptable to the computers in
MACROOM, you'll NOT be able to access resources in MACROOM.

IOW, access to resources is controlled by userid and password. Not by workgroup
membership. Workgroup membership simply makes it simpler to find other
computers on your immediate network. You can still see, and access, other
computers NOT in your workgroup. IF you have the proper credentials (userid /
password).

Please learn to munge your email address properly, to keep yourself a bit safer
when posting to open forums. Protect yourself and the rest of the internet -
never post your address unmunged.

Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.

If MSHOME and MACROOM are both workgroups, your son's computer can
connect to either of them without ever changing any network settings.
Windows networking supports multiple workgroups, and a computer on one
workgroup can access a computer on any other workgroup.

To see the computers in the same workgroup:

1. Open My Network Places.
2. Click "View workgroup computers".

To see the computers in the other workgroups:

3. Press the Backspace key.
4. Click the desired workgroup name.

if MACROOM is a domain, he should consult with the network
administrators at the school for what to do.
