Network Gaming

I have just installed a network in my home utilizing a Linksys Router (WRT54G) with 4 PC’s running Windows XP. I am trying to play multiplayer network games on this network but having problems connecting PC’s to the HOST PC. The network is functional as all PC’s are able to connect to the Internet and share files with the other PC’s. It seems that the IPX protocol is the issue. I don’t know what to do. The games I am trying to run are Warcraft II & Delta Force. Can you help me out?

I used to have the same problems myself with games like
Rogue Spear.

First set a static IP. Go here to find out how:

http://kb.linksys.com/cgi-bin/om_isapi.dll?
clientID=100628&QuestionText=static%
20ip&SelectName1=&advquery=%5bs%5d%5bRank%2c%2050%3a%5bSum%
3a%20static%20ip%5d%5bMerge%3a%20%5bThesaurus%3a%20static%
20ip%5d%5d%5d&infobase=linksysrev.nfo&record={13}
&softpage=IKW_ENU_JDocView

Next, within your router setup (most likely 192.168.1.1)
look around for a Forwarding tab (under advanced?). This
tab allows you to select different ranges of ports to open
for public use. Delta force uses port 17478 TCP and UDP.
WarCraft 2 uses port 49817 UDP. Enable them and you
should be ready to go. Also, DMZ Host will open up ALL
ports on the IP address you assign. It's not the smartest
idea in the world, but it can make life easier if you
don't want to list out 15 different sets of ports.

If none of that worked, then make sure your Internet
Connection Firewall is turned off (under advanced tab in
the properties of your LAN connection)

Sure hope that fixes it!

I am not to familiar with the routers. Would I have to set the static IP address just to play network games on my personal network? Your post made it sound like you were referring to accessing a gaming site on the internet. Right now, I just want my family to play multiplayer games on my network.

Please advise.

I was told that the games needed to have the IPX/SPX installed to allow them to function within my network. Is this correct? I am running Windows XP, is this compatible? Will this create conflicts within the network?

Some older games may require IPX/SPX, but I haven't seen any in a long time
that didn't work with TCP/IP.

But yes it woud be compatible.

Do I need to open ports on my router to host a network game within my network and only PC's on my network?

No.

I don't know about Warcraft II, but with Delta Force you
will have to enable IPX, especially if joining by "LAN".
You can, however, also join using the "Internet" option
using the local IP for the host, if you set the host up
for "Internet".
