Network errors (?) appearing in my system event log

C

Carol Haynes

I am consistently getting the following 3 errors appearing in my even log:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: ipnathlp
Event Category: None
Event ID: 32003
The Network Address Translator (NAT) was unable to request an operation of
the kernel-mode translation module. This may indicate misconfiguration,
insufficient resources, or an internal error. The data is the error code.
Data:
0000: 1f 00 00 00 ....

Event Type: Error
Event Source: RemoteAccess
Event Category: None
Event ID: 20082
The Remote Access Server could not reset lana 5 (the error code is the data)
and will not be active on it.
Data:
0000: 23 00 00 00 #...

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: RemoteAccess
Event Category: None
Event ID: 20169
Unable to contact a DHCP server. The Automatic Private IP Address
169.254.61.245 will be assigned to dial-in clients. Clients may be unable to
access resources on the network.

The first error is described in the MSKB but only apparently applies to
Windows 2000 Server which I am not using. I don't understand what I am
supposed to do to reolve the problem. The article is at:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;293497

There are no references to either of the other codes on MSKB except in a
list of possible codes with the same message listed!

Obviously something is wrongly configured - any help to get it sorted out
would be appreciated.

I am using:

Windows 2000 Pro SP4
Ad-hoc wireless network of two computers.
Dial-up networking

Also does anyone know of any source of easy to understand information
explaining how the different protocols work and interact with each other and
how to configure settings (perferably back to default without having to do a
reinstall of Windows)?

Cheers

Thanks Marina.

I found a response to event 32003 which I think I understood (I have added
the suggested registry key but haven't yet checked it solved the problem).

The other two bring up responses I simply don't understand, and event 20169
refers me to an Administrative tool that doesn't seem to be present in
Windows 2000 Pro ???

Any help or pointers on what is going on (for the network jargon illiterate)
with events 20082 and 20169 would be appreciated.

Cheers

Hi Carol,

Are you or did you use ICS?
Do you have a VPN-connection allowing other computers in? Is there possibly
netbeui on enabled?
Can you post the ipconfig/all from this computer?

Yes - I have two computers in an Ad-hoc wireless network.
Do you have a VPN-connection allowing other computers in? Is there possibly
netbeui on enabled?

Not that I know of - how do I check?
Can you post the ipconfig/all from this computer?

Hi Carol,

I suppose that your computer was not connected to another one at this time.
That might cause the errors in the eventlog, because ICS is 'bound' to the
LAN-adapter. Right now your LAN is not connected, so ICS can't do its work.

If you are connected to another computer, do the same errors 'disappear'?

Sorry for slow response - been away over the weekend.

The only remaining message is:

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: RemoteAccess
Event Category: None
Event ID: 20169
Unable to contact a DHCP server. The Automatic Private IP Address
169.254.61.245 will be assigned to dial-in clients. Clients may be unable to
access resources on the network.

This persists even when I have both computers up and running. They also seem
to be working fine together.

Hi Carol,

No problem. Hope you had a nice weekend.

On which connection do you have ICS shared? How exactly are you connecting
to the internet? You are using a modem, right?
The message you're getting now means that your LAN-card can't obtain an IP
from the DHCP-server. If you have setup ICS right, your LAN-card would get
an IP like 192.168.0.1 and your computer would act like the DHCP-server.
Check the ICS-configuration or just set it up again.

Correct

How do I configure ICS? The only options I have found are in the DUN
settings? "Enable connection sharing" and "Enable on-demand dialing" both of
which are ticked.

There is a "Settings ..." button which gives two tabs "Applications" and
"Services". Applications has nothing listed, Services has a list of unticked
items all of which relate to FTP, Mail and Telnet services.

Should I be adding something to these lists?

Are there other settings I should be looking at.

My big problem is I don't know what half of these things are! I know what
FTP and Telnet are but what the heck is a DHCP server? This is the trouble
with buying 'idiot proof' plug and play hardware - there is no information
on background info, what is being set up or how to configure anything and
Microsoft's Help and KB assume you know what you are doing with resepct to
netwrok protocols etc.

In IPCONFIG /ALL it says DHCP is not enabled - do I need to enable it? If so
how? "DHCP Client" service is already started in the services list.

Thanks for your help

Hi Carol,

On the DUN-connection disable the internetsharing to clear everything.
Reboot and see if there is anything in the eventlogs.
Then enable the internetsharing. You should see a message about the
192.168.0.1 that will be given to your LAN-card.
Have a look in the Help on ICS.

I have ICS altogether and still get:

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: RemoteAccess
Event Category: None
Event ID: 20169
Unable to contact a DHCP server. The Automatic Private IP Address
169.254.23.176 will be assigned to dial-in clients. Clients may be unable to
access resources on the network.

I am also now getting:

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: Dhcp
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1007
Your computer has automatically configured the IP address for the Network
Card with network address 0020E05D225F. The IP address being used is
169.254.146.19.
Data:
0000: 00 00 00 00 ....

Which I haven't seen before???

Also my network completely refused to work at all!

Having disabled ICS a different IP was autoconfigured on my main computer
and then the computers simply didn't talk to each other any more.

I have reenabled ICS and have now got my network back.

Something really screwy is going on here.

Do you/or anyone have any idea how to restore all the default settings for
windows networks without having to do a new installation?

Hi Carol,

This is really weird. Are all W2K/XP's fully patched?
How many computers are there and how are they connected?

Tell me about it ;-)

I have two computers one downstairs (an Athlon XP 1600+ system) the other
upstairs (an older Pentium III system) in my house. They are networked with
two Actiontec Wireless USB 802.11b adapters in an 'Ad-hoc' network using
128-bit encryption. The one downstairs connects to the internet via a dial
up connection. Both are running fully up to date versions of Windows 2000
Pro SP4. The downstairs dial up is set to dial-on-demand ICS which is used
by the computer upstairs. Apart from internet access the network is used to
share files etc. and user 'My Documents' folders etc. are setup across the
network so that as far as possible one setup is mirrored across both
computers.

The problems seem to originate from the Athlon computer.

I have got rather a lot of software installed (I use it for media intensive
tasks such as PhotoShop/Illustrator, Video/Audio Editing and WebDesign) and
I'd guess something has got screwed up somewhere along the line.

As usual troubleshooting windows is not easy especially when there is no
simple documentation that gives an overview of how the setup is organised
and how it all works.

Hi Carol,

Looks good to me.
Go to the TCP/IP-properties of the Athlon-nic and put the IP 192.168.0.1 and
subnet 255.255.255.0 in there, right after a reboot.
Then reboot again, do a ipconfig/all and check if that looks exactly the
same as the one you've posted. Check the eventlogs.
Does it work now?

The TCP/IP properties are already set manually to those values. If I don't,
and use automatic assignment, I seem to get an IP allocated that is in the
same range but doesn't all the network connection work at all.

I have just noticed that the remaining EventID seems to be referring to
computers dialling in - is there anyway I can disable that as I don't need
or want external computers dialling in to home? Presumably it would then not
need to allocate resources to a potential dial in client computer?

Carol

Cracked it!!

Somehow the service "Routing and Remote Access" had been enabled. I have now
disabled it and the are no more errors/warnings and the remote access
connection has disappeared again.

Thanks again for your help.

One final question - do you know any good websites or books that explain
windows networking in an accessible way? I am not computer illiterate (I
used to teach computer science many years ago) but there is so much jargon
and so many different layers of stuff going on that most of the help files
are like reading a foreign language.

Cheers

Hi Carol,

Great! Glad you've got it working now.

About the websites or books: jeeh, I wouldn't know right now. Google can be
a big help though.
