KB 293497 says to change the Mask to the Subnet Mask that the External
Network uses.

My addresses are:
Laptop where error is occurring:
IP Address: 192.168.100.100
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.100.254

Desktop:
IP Address: 192.168.100.102
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.100.254

Would someone pls tell me what the instructions
"Change the Mask to the Subnet Mask that the External Network uses"
is telling me to do,
Where will I find the "External Network" to get this Subnet Mask nbr?
Thx ...

Mark L. Ferguson

Your Subnet mask is fine.
You should start by opening a command prompt on each machine, and do a ping
of the default gateway.:
ping 192.168.100.254

If both don't timeout, Open the gateway config app:
http://192.168.100.254
You probably have something wrong in the WAN configuration. Clone the Mac
address, and reset the WAN connection, then restart the gateway(router or
switch)

If no help, on each machine try a prompt command:
ipconfig /release
then:
ipconfig /renew

Mark, Thank you so very much for your Help. Sorry for the delay but I had
to postpone continuing.

Before my questions I want to show u this
Warning Dhcp Event 1007 which appears periodically. It may help u
diagnose the problem.

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: Dhcp
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1007
Date: 04-Apr-08
Time: 11:25:35 PM
User: N/A
Computer: NOTEBOOK
Description:
Your computer has automatically configured the IP address for the Network
Card with network address 0020E08F97C4. The IP address being used is
169.254.25.151.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
Data:
0000: 00 00 00 00 ............

Mark Note the IP Address being used is: 169.254.25.151
whereas my IP Address on the Laptop is: 192.168.100.100.
I bought this IBM ThinkPad from a friend - this wasn't the address being
used.
In case it's relative, Friend was using Cable. I'm using DSL.
My Desktop & Laptop are Wireless Networked using the program, "Pure Network
Magic".
Internet access is slower on the laptop vs the desktop but the laptop is 4/5
yrs old. Also I've changed from Cable using a Linksys Router to DSL using a
SIEMANS Speedstream 6520 Wireless ADSL Gateway. The change could be the
reason I'm getting these errors.

Results of Your Suggestions:
1. Ping: Immediate response on both computers - Recvd 4 of 4.

2. I entered http://192.168.100.254 in the Address Bar ... Result: A
Window asking for User Name & Password which I completed and clicked on OK -

"The Login Failed. Check your Password and make sure it's typed in
correctly. Access Permission is currently Denied".

I tried a few times always with the same results. What would be the reason
it was unsuccessful? Is this a common occurrence?

3. Clone the MAC address ...
I'm presuming a Window would have appeared showing what is called a "Mac
Address"? I've Searched but have yet to learn how to "Clone" the MAC address.
Would u explain pls in case I may gain Access at a later date.

4. Reset the WAN Connection then Restart the Router. Presume this means
to switch the DSL Router OFF for a minute then back ON.

Your last suggestion: ... ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew
seems simple but I won't try it unless u instruct to do so. There must be a
reason it was your last suggestion. …

Basically, you have found your problem. Routers have a 'default password'.
The one I see most often is 'admin' for user name, and 'admin' for password.
(It varies by router) Whatever it is for your router, their help site is
bound to have it as a frequently asked question.
Also, ALL routers have a Reset switch, to blank any settings like a special
password, and return to default. (sometimes a 'pinhole' you put a paperclip
wire into and hold for reset.)
Your previous user has set some things you don't need. Going into that setup
at the router (gateway) address should walk you through your Internet
connection setup, no problem.
A few small items left. (Don't give up on me, now :)
When you reset to defaults, the router could well have a new 'gateway
address' for it's config stuff. You get whatever the gateway is from the
command: ipconfig. After reset, use it, as before (e.g. http://192.168.0.1 )
The dhcp error you report is expected behavior. When the router fails to
assign a local 192.... address, you get that 169.... address by default.
This will change when you run the router setup for your LAN (your
'workgroup').
OK, last technical bit to assimilate. Your SSID. You need not use one,
unless you are going to have wireless connections, and then it's only a
security safety thing.
You probably won't need to 'release' and 'renew', since the router will do
that.

Hi Mark, Both Errors are GONE - Thx to you.
Rather than Resetting the Router I chose what I considered the simpler
method first,
ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew and it cleaned up the Errors.

I’ve Rebooted or Shutdown a nbr of times and the errors haven’t reappeared.
I read to type EXIT when leaving the Command Prompt Window? Do u
recommend doing so?

I was successful getting into the IP Acct?? using the same Router Address
and saw the 12 digit MAC Address but because I had no idea how to “Clone†I
left it alone.
I didn’t feel it was necessary anyway as I knew by that time that both
Errors had disappeared.

What DO u mean by the term: Clone the MAC Address? What would I have done
with that nbr?
I might as well ask now vs going through the rest of my life aware there’s
only ONE THING about Networking that I don’t know and had passed on the
opportunity to learn. LOL

Ya did REAL GOOD Mark! Few would have responded to such a Novice. As to
Rating - is it advisable as my IP Address will be exposed on the Web? Pls
Advise.

I have another problem. I need a way to get rid of the entries in Device
Mgr of the previous Owner’s D-Link Network Connector. Hope you see the Post
in a day or so.
Thx so much for your efforts.

Good. Cloning a Mac address is when you teach the router that a new device
is there, instead of what it is set to now. You had that already. (all
network devices have a theoretically exclusive Mac address)
The ratings thing is just a way my ego keeps score.:) If you click my name
in the top left corner of this reading pane, you get my stats. As for your
IP, any web server you open a page on can get your IP if it wants it.
(http://WhatIsMyIP.com) It's nothing to worry about. Your router firewall is
practically bullet proof.
On to Devmgmt.msc (Dev. Manager). Anything NOT physically attached at the
moment, will disappear from the list when you use 'action' menu, 'scan for
hardware changes' If you see something after that, it's there somewhere.
Perhaps you mean in the "Network Connections" folder. If so, those will have
a delete with a rightclick on the icon.

Hi Mark, Device Mgr\Action\Scan for Hardware Changes. I clicked a cpl
times but the D-Link entries are still there. I Deleted the D-Link Software
in Add/Remove a cpl weeks ago and I have Rt clicked, Uninstall, these D-Link
entries but a Window prevents it saying it may be required to Boot.

I clicked Properties\Driver Tab\Uninstall but got “Refused as it may be
required to boot the computerâ€

I think too I was in the Registry trying to Delete the D-Link entries but
got a Window saying Cannot Delete as it may be related to Boot up. I’m
vague I know because I’ve been trying to get one out of the Desktop Registry
too -
Marvel Yukon 88E800/8003/8010 PCI Gigabit Ethernet Controller– it came back
from a Shop with this entry (Had a new Power Supply installed). I phd them
to help me delete it and was told not related to them that it must be on the
MB although I’ve never seen it before and I have a JPG of Device Manager
entries prior to leaving home. I guess it got activated some way. Anyway
back to this problem.

Maybe this Laptop Device Mgr Itemized list will help you:

Network Adapters.
Direct Parallel

D-Link AirPlus Xtrme G DWL-G650 Adapter – Packet Scheduler miniport
D-Link DFE-690 TXD CardBus PC Card – Packet Scheduler Miniport

High Rate Wireless LAN MiniPCI Combo Card
High Rate wireless LAN MiniPCI Combo Card – Packet Scheduler Miniport
Infrared port
Intel (R) PRO/100 VE Network connection (NOT PRO/ 1000)
Intel (R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection – Packet Scheduler Miniport
WAN Miniport (IP)
WAN Miniport (IP) – Packet Scheduler Miniport
WAN Miniport (L2TP)
WAN Miniport (PPPOE)
WAN Miniport (PPTP)

Network Connections … No mention of D-Link and no leftover files in Windows
Explorer.
Would this D-Link Adapter be a physical CARD in the Laptop? Is this
something I might be able to remove. Oh I just thought of something. I’m
getting an Error on the laptop:

09Apr08 10:13:23 Service Control Manager, Event Error #7000:
The NEC PCI to USB Enhanced Host Controller Service failed to start due to
the following error:
The Service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it
has no enabled device associated with it.
Do u think this is the D-Link Adapter? If so, from what u say, it will be
there forever. Darn.
There must be somewhere u can release that “Hands off - Might be Required to
Boot†message.

You’ve already said if it didn’t delete after Scanning for Hardware Changes
but I wanted u to see what I was seeing to make sure. After all this typing
I’m even sure it can’t be. I’ll post it anyway in case u can see something a
little odd. …

Yes, that looks exactly like a physical card in one of the PCI slots on the
MoBo would look like. Pulling it may not be what you want, if you are using
it for your Ethernet connection. The wire from the router would be stuck in
the RJ-45 port of the card, if so. If not, pulling it is easy and harmless.
I would guess they installed this 'packet scheduler' is for some local
domain server they were using, but I'm really not familiar with that.
