Network drive mapping using incorrect username to logon

Hello all,

Our company is on a domain using Active Directory. One of our users is
having an issue when mapping to his home drive. It seems that it's
attempting to authenticate as a user on the file server where the home
drive exists rather than using his domain account, even after he's
logged onto the local machine with that domain account. When the
mapping is attempted, he gets a password prompt with the username in
the following form:

FILESERVER\jsmith

when it should attempt to use it in this form:

DOMAINNAME\John.Smith

The jsmith would be the old naming convention used on the domain, so
this may be stored somewhere and cause confusion. I can manually
change it to log on as the correct domain user, but when he changes
his password he can no longer use that mapping. Also, it seems to only
be happening on his local machine, because if he logs into another
machine using the domain account, the mapping is created as expected.
I suspect it's something messed up in his profile on the local
machine, but wiping out the profile is a last resort. Has anyone seen
this before?

Thanks in advance,
Shannon

Have you checked out stored passwords on the Advanced tab of the Users
Control Panel?
