Network Docs Take 4-5 Minutes to Open

We are having a strange problem with word documents opening slowly. Our users
are accessing templates stored on a shared network server. They access the
template, save the template as a .doc locally, type in the required
information, and then copy the document back to the same server on a
different drive. When they return to open the document they have saved to the
network drive, it takes 4-5 minutes for that document, and all others saved
that way, to finally open. We have always used this method but the problem
just started occurring 3-4 weeks ago. All this is occurring on our large file
server, ‘Serverd’. Part of the problem is that when we boot the old server
where the templates resided several years ago, the problem no longer
persists. That server has been off for over a year and our problem only
started several weeks ago so that tidbit seems to further confuse the issue.
If I view the properties of these templates stored on the network, they all
show they are referencing templates on our K drive on serverd which is
correct.

All users are running XP Pro and Office Pro 2003 with SP 4 installed. Our
server is running Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Standard.

We have considered a hot fix auto download as the culprit since the issue
began just a few weeks ago BUT booting the old server that we intended to let
die quietly has confused me. This old server has nothing on it but old
profiles of past employees.

Any help provided would be greatly appreciated.
