Network credentails not caching for remote users

I posted this over on Windows XP Working Remotely newsgroup, but didn't get a
satisfactory answer so I'm reposting here.

This is our issue:
When remote users take laptops home and try to log in using cached network
credentials, it takes a long, long time (30-90 minutes) for the desktop to
appear and performance is horrible. Windows do not open and executables do
not execute. I pulled Task manager to see if anything was hogging CPU or
memory but everything looked fine.

When the same laptops are docked at the office and on the domain, they logon
within seconds and the computer performs flawlessly.

What I need to know is where should I start troubleshooting this if I see
nothing unusual in Task Manager or in the Startup folder?

Much obliged,
JM

How about some more applicable info... like....

When did the problem present itself?

Did the problem start after a software install or after they were
joined to your domain??

Actually it is an existing problem that presented itself when I started at my
new job. The IT staff here have a workaround that includes having the user
log on locally to the laptop and access their NT account's resources on the
C: drive via shortcuts.

Sorry about being so vague, but here is another clue.

I booted into safe mode with networking and still got the same behavior.
Explorer windows don't open, apps take forever to launch. Even Task Manager
and command prompts take forever to come up.

When I did finally get a command prompt to come up I did an ipconfig
/release which dropped the connection to my wireless router.

Suddenly I could open windows, start applications etc. The computer was
behaving normally. ipconfig /renew caused it to fail again.

try disabling the wireless on the laptop.

Bob,

The laptop would not be of any use to me if I disabled the WNIC. Something
is trying to reach a networked resource that it cannot find and it is hanging
everything else.

Default printer is on the network? You have persistant mapped drives
instead of scripting?
