Network connections not restored after restart

I am running Windows XP Pro (SP1) on a Compaq Evo N1020v notebook connected
to a P2P network. This machine is a client for internet connection sharing.

When I restart the computer (or turn in on after having turned it off), the
network connections are not restored, and the assigned IP address starts
with 169 (rather than 192.168.0.xxx). If, after this happens, I restart the
machine in safe mode with networking, then the network connections are
restored, and the next time I restart the machine normally the network
connections are also restored. But when I restart after using the machine
for a while the network connections again are not restored. Repeated normal
restarts are ineffective, but restarting in safe mode always works. Strange,
don't you think?

I am having the same problem. The connection is restored
but I have no network path. Is there something that
changes each time the system is logged off?
