My internet connection does not show (or once in a while shows as disabled)
in Network connections. I have a broadband connection which works (usually
well), but cannot access the control to turn it off or check on it.

This problem is new since I reinstalled WinXP, a clean installation with SP2
on formatted drive. With Win XP SP1 and before, the internet connection
showed and functioned

I am connecting through a Linksys Router which is the centre of a small home
network. The Network Connection is shown in the normal way. Win XP’s firewall
is disabled, since I have a very effective firewall in the Router.

IPConfig gives me the usual readings. I can ping with normal results.
Everything seems to be working except my access to the control set up. Since
I’m a control freak ... someone can really make my day by telling me how to
fix this.

Try uninstalling the network adapter and reinstalling it. Get updated
drivers from the NIC mftr.'s website or, if you have an OEM machine
(HP, Sony, etc.) from the OEM's website.
