Ted Evans

I have read and tried the suggestions that are on the newsgroup about this
problem but have not been successful in resolving it. Would appreciate any
additional suggestions.

system #1 dell with w2k - sees all three in "entire network", accesses
dell and gw2550 but returns "the network path was not found" when accessing
dell4600.

system #2 gw2550 with w2k - sees all three in "entire network", accesses
dell and gw2550 but returns "the network path was not found" when accessing
dell4600.

system #3 dell4600 with xp pro sp2 - sees the workgroup name in "entire
network", but returns "workgroup is not accessible...... The list of servers
for this workgroup is not currently available" when atempting to access the
workgroup.

All three systems are in the same workgroup. Files and printer are shared.
Turned off the firewall. The Computer Browser, and the TCP/IP NetBIOS
Helper, services both show with Status = Started. No software firewall.

system #3 can not ping itself either by name are IP. The cable and router
were verified to be working properly.

Would really appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks.

Ted,

Please provide ipconfig information for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.
Identify operating system (by name and version) with each ipconfig listing.

Please provide adhoc browser view for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "net view >c:\netview.txt" into the command window -
Open c:\netview.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.

The Microsoft Browstat program will show us what browsers you have in your
domain / workgroup, at any time.

You can download Browstat from either:
<http://www.dynawell.com/reskit/microsoft/win2000/browstat.zip>
<http://rescomp.stanford.edu/staff/manual/rcc/tools/browstat.zip>

Browstat is very small (40K), and needs no install. Just unzip the downloaded
file, copy browstat.exe to any folder in the Path, and run it from a command
window.

For more information about the browser subsystem (very intricate), see:
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=188001
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=188305
<http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winntas/deploy/prodspecs/ntbrowse.mspx>

Please provide browstat information for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "browstat status >c:\browstat.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\browstat.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.
Identify each computer by name and operating system.

How long after disabling the firewall on System #3 (Windows Firewall?) did you
try pinging itself? Did you check hardware diagnostics for the network adapter?

Please provide static route for Computer #3.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "route print >c:\route.txt" into the command window -
Open c:\route.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.

Hello Chuck,

Thanks for all the good suggestions. While doing some of the test I found
that there was a Norton software firewall running in additon to the firewall
in XP. This is a new computer so it came from Dell that way. Once Norton was
turned off, everything worked.

Thanks again for the help.
