Hi all, I'm having a bit of an odd problem.
My computer is being assigned it IP from my router but I can't get on the
net with either IE or Firefox. I have done a virus scan and all the usual
stuff and can't find antthing unusual. the things I've noticed are:
Can't ping my router eventhough it is assigning the IP.
Can't get on net.
Registry mechanic doesn't find any problems.
Xoftspy doesn't detect any Spyware etc.
Mcafee virus scan doesn't find anything.

Is there anything else I should look for? or other software to use?

Things to try - and as in all troubleshooting, try one thing at a time
and test after each change:

1. Connect your computer directly to the cable/dsl modem. Can you get on
the Internet now? If yes, replace the router. If no, see #2 below.

2. Power cycle the modem and the router. Unplug the modem and unplug the
router. Wait about 30 seconds. Plug the modem back in and after all its
lights are on properly, plug the router in. Now try. If all is well,
fine. If not, see #3 below.

3. If #1 and #2 don't work, call your ISP to see if there are problems
in your area.

Thanks Malke, I have three pc's running thru the router and the other 2 are
working without a problem.
The other unusual thing is when I go onto IE it won't let me open the
options or any other utils from the menu bars. Have tried to reinstall IE
although it says I have a newer version and won't let me. I don't think this
is the problem though as Firefox can't connect either so I presume something
has taken over the connection.
Not sure what else too do.. flummoxed.

This is why it is a good thing to have *all* the information in the
*first* post. Since you know the modem and the router are working, you
have to look at the troubled machine.

1. Make sure it is virus/malware-free:
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

2. If the machine is clean, ask yourself "what happened between the time
things worked and the time they didnt?". Install any software,
toolbars, hardware, drivers, updates? Did you install drivers for your
network adapter (NIC) from Windows Update (bad idea).

3. If it was a sudden change, try System Restore to when things worked.

4. Troubleshoot the hardware. One way to determine if a problem is
hardware-related or from Windows is to boot with Knoppix, a Linux
distro that runs from CD. If Knoppix can't get on the Internet, you
know it's hardware. Get Knoppix from www.knoppix.net. You'll need a
fast Internet connection and third-party burning software to burn
the .iso (image).

5. Swap out the ethernet cable. Put it in a different port on the
router. Is the light on the NIC lit? Swap out the NIC for a
known-working one.

Hi Malke, tried every step on your site, Sysclean, Hijack this, Spybot. They
all find nothing of significance. Odd thing is I can connect to the net when
in Safe mode but when booted normally no connection. I have 50GB on the drive
so would like to find a solution before having to reformat and do a clean
install. Any ideas?
Thanks
Teezgaff.
