network connection problem

The router uses an IP of 10.0.0.1 with the latest firmware. DHCP is set to operate between 10.0.0.6 and 10.0.0.25

The laptop is a Windows XP Home computer operating wirelessly, running Norton AV 2000. It is set to use a static IP of 10.0.0.2, subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 and a default gateway of 10.0.0.1. It works, no problem. When running the laptop wired, it uses a static IP of 10.0.0.3 and works fine

The first desktop is running Windows 2000 Pro, service pack 2, norton av 2000. It is set to use a static IP of 10.0.0.4, subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 and a default gateway of 10.0.0.1. Again, this works without any problem

The second desktop is running Windows 2000 Pro service pack 4, norton av 2003. It is set to use DHCP. This computer will not connect to the router at all. It either has an IP address of 0.0.0.0 or somthing in the 169.* range. As this is the main computer in the house, its a blinking pain! I've tried setting it to use a static IP of 10.0.0.5 with the same settings above, but i cannot ping the router or the other computers on the network

Does anyone have any ideas?

It may have a problem with a nic driver, bad nic card, corrupt tcp/ip stack
or such. See the two links below on some things to try including
reinstalling tcp/ip and fixing winsock. --- Steve

we've solved the problem, it was a combination of a faulty network card and a setting on the operating system that was throwing it out. We reinstalled win2k and replaced the card and its now working.
