Network connection not detected after SP 2 installation

I use a dial-up network connection. After installing SP2, I get the
following behavior. After I connect to my ISP and start to surf the
web, I get a "Network Connection" dialog box for each and every new
web address. It asks me to select the connection that I want--even
though one is still active. If I select a connection and click
connect, I get the dial connection dialog window just as I would if
this were the first time. If I click on dial, I get the web page that
I wanted. If I don't select "connect" and "dial" each time, I don't
get to that web page.

Before installing SP2, I did not get this behavior. I only got a
Network Connection dialog box when I was not already connected to the
internet. I could surf from page to page as expected without being
asked to connect each time.

I've spent several hours today serching the MS knowledge base and
Google groups, but have not found quite the same issue.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Good idea, thank you. I checked the IE tools->options->LAN Settings,
but the proxy is not set.

I received the following proceedure for "cleaning" IE from Microsoft
support. This cleanup proceedure fixed my IE-network connection
problem. I post it in case others have the same problem.

Clean Internet Explorer
==================
1. Click Start, click Run, input "INETCPL.CPL" (without the quotation
marks) and press Enter.

2. Click Delete cookies and Delete files on the General tab.
3. Click Clear History in the History area, and then click OK in the
dialog box that appears.
4. Click Settings, click View Objects, delete all objects there, and
then close the Window.
5. Click View Files, delete all files there, and then close the
Window.
6. On the Connections tab, click the LAN Settings button, and then
uncheck all the boxes.

7. On the Advanced tab, click the Restore Defaults button, and then
click to clear the checkbox beside "Enable third-party extensions".
8. On the Advanced tab, make sure to enable the "Disable script
debugging" check box.
