Here is the setup, I have serval comuters networked together using DHCP
enabled router which assigns addresses in the 10.0.0.xxx range. This network
works fine. One computer in this network has a second ethernet card and has
a static IP address assigned which allows it to connect to the internet.

Fist let me say I DO NOT want to bridge the two networks, I just need the
one machine to have access to both. The static IP nic is set 10 mbs, the
private net is at 100 mbs. Why is that important? Well it seems that when IE
tries to connect to the internet it looks for the fastest connection first,
which is the private net, which of course times out. The alternate path
(second connection) to the internet is never tired. If I disable the fast
connection, good internet connectivity. The kicker, if I hamsting the faster
network down to 10 mbs, good connectivity to both networks, bump it up, IE
can longer find the Internet.

It just seems obvious that if an internet request fails on one connection,
then the other connection should be tried, but that does not seem to be the
case, it is fastest connection or nothing.

Thanks for considering the problem

Its your default gateway.

The internet connection is the only connection that should have a default
gateway.

That seems to be correct. I had to disable DHCP on the machine in question
and assign a static address in the 10.0.0.xxx range, but this allowed me to
null out the gateway. The machine is happy on both nets and at different
data rates.

Thanks for the help
