Network card faliure?

Hi there!
I have two notebooks, both with windows xp pro installed
on them. One of them works fine and recognize my Ethernet
Network card, the other one does not recognize it.
I've tried to install it manually, without success.
Doesn't even show on the Device Mngr when it is in the
card slot.
Just reinstalled the windows system, hoping to solve the
trouble but it didn't help. Perhaps is there a problem
with my notebook?
Anyone who can give me advice, I'd appreciate it.

I had a similiar issue - I went to a 16 bit card vs a 32
bit and it worked
