network cable unplugged

I am having trouble with my cable modem. A tech came out and said my NIC
card was bad and switched me over to using the USB port to connect to my
cable modem. It works but very slow. So I intalled a new NIC card and XP
recognizes the new connection but says network cable unplugged, witch is the
same message I get with my old NIC card. Is there anyway to tell if my NIC
card is bad or if there is something wrong with my modem.

Thanks in advance

Chris

Hi,

Are you using a cross over network cable or a straight-thru (patch cable)?
To tell look at the network cable ends itself and see if the 8 coloured
wires inside the ends are the same when you look at it from left to right.

If they're a different order than you're using a cross over cable and you'll
need a straight-thru cable.

Didn't the technician check the CAT 5 cable? He should have done that first.
Anyway, try a different CAT 5 (RJ45) cable, and make sure it is NOT a
crossover cable.
