Xp Home Edition, Vista Ultimate, NetGear Switch, Cable Modem

Attempts to get Vista Ultimate to allow my Xp Home Edition PC to access the
Internet through the 100MB switch to the Vista Ultimate PC NIC card out of it
to the second Vista Ultimate PC NIC card to the Scientific Atlanta cable
modem that Comcast is using have failed.

Ideally, hooking up the cable modem to the Netgear Switch that both PCs use
would be the best configuration, but I've had no luck getting that to work.

Vista is supposed to let another PC channel its attempts to connect to the
Internet through it to the cable modem, but that doesn't work either.

Anyone got any ideas how to get the Xp Home edition workstation online to
the Internet ... at the same time that the Vista Ultimate work station is
online?

The Cable Modem to the Switch is not working because you need a router. A
router is used as the device that connects the Internet to your home private
network. You could try to replace the switch with a router.

Thanks, I get the dummy award today. I was trying to use old and already
paid for equipment that works just fine until one tries to use it for more
than it was designed for. Thanks again.

If you haven't done so already, you might want to post this question to the
Vista General and the XP Networking and the Web newsgroups. You could also
search on Help and Support in Vista and XP for any information on Internet
Connection Sharing.

Personally, it's been my experience that configuring Internet Connection Sharing
is more trouble than it's worth. The last time I set it up I had a crossover
cable connecting the client computer to the second NIC in the host computer. You
can't use a standard Ethernet cable to make the connection.

I never attempted this with a switch involved in the configuration, but I
suspect one of the cables has to be plugged into the Uplink port. The other
cable would then connect to the second NIC in the Vista computer. Check the
documentation for your switch to find out which port doubles as an uplink port
if it's not so labeled.

Good luck

I took a look at the switch, and it has "Auto Uplink" printed on the front of
it, leading one to believe that all 5 ports are auto uplink without the need
for a cross over cable.
